Janson Family Farms is a multigenerational, family-owned estate in Volcán, Chiriquí, on the slopes of Volcán Barú and Tisingal in Western Panama. Founded by Swedish immigrant Carl Axel Janson in the mid‑20th century as a cattle and dairy operation, the family shifted into coffee in the 1980s after soil studies showed strong potential for high-quality coffee. In 1990, Carl’s sons officially established Janson Coffee, planting varieties such as Catuai, Caturra, Pacamara and, later, green-tip Geisha across farms like Hacienda Cafetalera and Los Alpes. The family manages the farms with a strong environmental focus, combining coffee plots with about 200 hectares of private nature reserve and wetlands, using practices like enzyme-based fertilisation, and avoiding herbicides and pesticides.
