Farm: Aricha Country: Ethiopia Woreda: Yirgacheffe Region: Sidama Elevation: 1,900 masl Varieties: JARC 74110, 74112, and 74165 Processing: Natural Sourced Through: Melbourne Coffee Merchants --- This coffee was produced by Ayele Begashaw, who grows and processes coffee on his 4-hectare farm Aricha, which is named after Ethiopia’s famed kebele (local village) of Aricha. Ayele’s farm is located near the woreda (administrative district) of Yirgacheffe, in the Gedeo political zone, in Ethiopia’s Southern Nationalities, Nations, and People’s Region. The farm is privately owned and operated by Ayele and his family. Being able to purchase a lot from a single producer in Ethiopia is rare and incredibly special. Most farmers are not able to connect to buyers directly and must sell their cherry at local washing stations where it is combined with other farmers’ lots, losing transparency and distinction. To access support to process and market his coffee separately, Bekele joined the Lalisaa Project, an initiative that aims to provide opportunity and resources for smallholder farmers and to connect them to overseas buyers like MCM directly. Before partnering with the project, Ayele struggled to promote and market his coffee internationally, due to a lack of finances and experience. By working with Lalisaa, a program he is enthusiastic to be a part of, he is now able to earn an ongoing, profitable income from his crop – which he uses to support his family and send his kids to school.
